Family driver, groceries buyer, all-round money dispenser and life-line, the father has been all this and a lap you could flop on for no real reason. Things change once you’re out of childhood and before you know it, you’re on your own feet and looking out for yourself. But there are moments when you wonder why anyone would bother to stoically endure all those roles through what are the best years of their life. And before you take a U-turn and say something uncharitable, it would probably help to know that for certain reasons the idea of Father’s Day, when it was first mooted, didn’t meet with the near-universal agreement as Mother’s Day. This is a Day that needed decades of dogged lobbying before it came into existence. With that detour, maybe I can return to what I had started with.
In any case, you’ve probably got wind of what I’m leading up to here. It’s got everything to do with Father’s Day being around the corner. Yes – a custom-made day for families around the world to celebrate fathers and their heroism. Another off-the-shelf day, you may say. Let’s face it –the schedules that we keep leave us little time to dwell on the need to appreciate the people who have helped us so much, let alone express any meaningful appreciation to them. A day set aside to celebrate a title that has repeated itself through the generations, also speaks to the father; it is a message that his sacrifices were not erased by his inevitable failings in a role that can be over-idealized.
A lot of countries around the world celebrate Father’s Day on the third Sunday in June. In Germany, it is also referred to as Men’s Day and is traditionally celebrated with a hiking tour where small groups of men get together on a trip where they pull a wagon loaded with beer and food. In Taiwan, Father’s Day is celebrated in the month of August and the occasion – popularly referred to as Baba Day – is widely observed.
ITC Hotels has put together a tribute to the fathers of the world, in events, which allow you and your family to express gratitude to the man who laid the foundation for your life. This Father’s Day, which falls on June 20, Sheraton New Delhi, ITC Grand Central and ITC Maratha, give you the opportunity to express your love to the most important man in your life.
